Carebears, Maureen Johnson, AND the love of libraries? Loved it.

1) this was posted on my sweet sixteen, on which I got many many books. I too have the random stacks
2) I would buy a bookcase but i have no where to put another one.
3) Does Maureen know that she has the exact same name as the girl in “Rent” and if so, how does that make her feel. It would make me feel kind of awesome
4)What does one do at a sharing party?
5)I’m sorry that I’m commenting on 5 month old vlogs.
6) My firefox spell checker is freaky and the first suggestion for every word is “com bust” I don’t even know what that means, but I though I’d share.

You may think that you’ll never read The Care Bear book again, but if you decide to have kids–you will. I know because I’ve read that very book myself. Repeatedly. Last night, actually. Twice. When they had the sharing pary…everything just felt right again. Sigh. Oooohhh and there’s a movie version. It doesn’t really do the book justice…

Speaking of libraries..I can’t wait to go home so that I can go to my library and check out “An Abundance of Katherines.” I’ve been at school and haven’t been able to read it yet. Bummer. Have a great weekend!

Comment by Clair
2007-02-24 01:10:32

I am jealous! I have An Abundance of Katherines on hold at the the library of the city I am currently in. But I am 12th in line, and there are only 3 copies. I’m not sure if I’m going to be able to read it before I move in 2 months. And I can’t put on hold in the place I am moving back to because I have twenty dollars in fines (which isn’t characteristic of me, I swear, just this ONE TIME), so who knows when I’m going to get to read it. Maybe I should just go buy it.

Comment by margaret
2007-02-24 01:45:41

you have a moral dilemma. or maybe not, but you can choose:
spend less than $20 to buy katherines
OR
spend less than $20 to buy katherines and pay your library fines, thus enabling you to check out a multitude of other fantastic books that you would never be able to buy for under $20

Consider yourself lucky! I had to get “looking for alaska” on interlibrary loan and I can’t get “An Abundance of Katherines” at all. I can’t even buy it where I live. The closest bookstore is two hours from me. It’s all very bothersome. Our library is a little weird in what they will order. They stock very little that might be considered “controversial” but they carry vast numbers of romance novels that are by far more frankly sexual in nature than the things that they refuse to carry. So…a road trip is in order if I want to read “An Abundance…”

Comment by John Green

There’s always ordering over the Internet!

Hmm … did you notice that as soon as the Wii Controller (or, um … wind) turned the page, it flipped right back? (hehe)

I think you need to work out the kinks with the Wii Page Turner… great idea though.

And …

Maureen Johnson AND John Green? Two great authors together???

That’s awesome!

Maureen is HOT.
I thought I was gonna be on today, though? and am plunged into the slough (sp?) of despond

Sadly, I, too , have read more Care Bear books than I can think about without feeling nauseated….

Comment by Joanna
2007-02-23 23:36:52

Maureen IS hot. And from E’s brief appearance in B2.0 last month, it appears that she is pretty smokin’, too. And we all know John is adorable. Come to think of it, I’ve seen Rachel Cohn & David Levithan read and they’re pretty foxy, too. So is there some rule that YA authors have to be cute? For god’s sake, isn’t being very talented enough for you people?!

Not that I’m jealous or anything.

Comment by Carrie Jones
2007-02-24 00:23:18

I think the rule is if you are a YA author and you love in New York you have to be foxy, smokin’, hot or some combination of the three.

This rule does NOT apply to YA authors in Maine. How do I know? I live in Maine. I am writing YA and I am so, so far from smokin’. Sad, but true.

Comment by Carrie Jones
2007-02-24 00:24:10

Oops. Not LOVE in New York. LIVE in New York.

It’s also a rule that people like me always fail to reread, and then notice things much, much too late. AGGGHHH!

That would be a pretty awesome combination. Actually, when I first started watching the vlogs I found it really hard to tell John and Hank apart. Thinking back, I have no idea why, as they look utterly different. Perhaps my eyes are weak? All that staring at computer screens has ruined them.

The video is still refusing to work for me on here, but I watched it on my sister’s laptop, so all is right with my world again.

I love that Maureen was in this. She makes me giggle. That’s another thing, isn’t it? New York YA authors appear to not only be smokin’/hot/foxy, but funny in that quirky manner you just can’t learn. It would be depressing if it wasn’t so fun to bear witness to.

Next up; let’s see E. Lockhart! Squeep!

So am I the only one who hunted for familiar book spines in the Tour De John’s Library?

The only ones I recognized were Blankets, and the ever-present Infinite Jest

Which makes me wonder: do you keep your books organized in any particular manner? Or do you just fill them up as they come along, with the new books matching with the new shelves?

Man, I’m getting philosophical here.

Comment by John Green
2007-02-24 01:42:42

We pretty much books whereever they fit. Sometimes there will be a hint of organization, but only a hint. (For instance, to the left of Infinite Jest is David Foster Wallace’s “Oblivion” and his “Brief Interviews with Hideous Men.” To its right, is Eggers’ “What Is the What,” a Zagat restaurant guide, “Portnoy’s Complaint,” and Harold Bloom’s “The Anxiety of Influence.” So whatever system I have breaks down within two or three books every time.

We used to have a brilliantly catalogued library, but no longer. Maybe we’ll redo it one day…

Comment by Rummanah
2007-02-24 20:07:51

John,

Do you recommend the Egger’s book? I’m thinking of reading it when I get a chance?

What are the two green colored books next to your Mark Twain biography book? They kinda look like the Illustrated Classics of Huck Finn or Tom Sawyer.

Do you have any books that you wished you never bought because they suck?

I have a problem with throwing out books too. Or even trading them. It kinda seems like a sin…almost. Though, I do BUY used books, I just don’t sell the books back. Or any books at all. I need more bookshelves, but I also need a bigger room. I like the Wii idea, and you should so totally call Nintendo and get that ball rolling. That way reading is both a mental AND physical workout. Hm.

John,

I’m amazed how many books you got on Islam in your home library, which is really cool. Are you interested in Islam or just religions in particular? I also just some cool titles in case you are interested in getting more books on Islam, since I’m Muslim and all. Where did you get the one in the video? I’ve never heard of it.

Comment by John Green
2007-02-24 22:22:37

Rummanah,

Yeah, I have several dozen books about Islam. It’s what I studied in college and for many years I reviewed books about Islam and the Islamic world for “Booklist” Magazine. (This is maybe why Hassan in “An Abundance of Katherines” is a Muslim, and why Miles learns about Islam some in the class taught by Dr. Hyde.)

The book I showed was published about ten years ago by Indiana University Press. It’s excellent, but has a very narrow focus (it’s only about Uzbeks and how they came to be Muslims).

And I’m also happy to receive recommendations, for me and for our viewers.

(For other viewers who made it to the end of this very long comment, my favorite intro to islam is “No God but God” by Reza Aslan.)

Given that libraries across the world pay to purchase the books that people check out for free, and…

given that authors can go to the library and check out books written by other authors (or even their own books I suppose) without having to pay the other authors, it follows that…

authors get a triple benefit from libraries: the free publicity that good librarians provide by placing their books in the new acquisitions display, increased sales of hard-bound copies of their books (paperbacks don’t hold up to heavy circulation very well), and the authors don’t have to spend any of their hard-earned royalties on other authors’ books.

But then there’s the whole property tax issue…
